এই অপ্রকাশিত রচনা সংগ্রহ করার জন্যই বর্তমান গবেষক অ্যান মারি ওয়ালীউল্লাহর সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করেন। ১৯৯৩ সালের ১০ই মার্চ বাংলা একাডেমির রিসার্চ স্কলার হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর সৈয়দ ওয়ালীউল্লাহ-রচিত ইংরেজি ও ফরাসি আখ্যানসমূহ তখনো জনমানসে অপরিচিত ও অনবহিত রয়ে গেছে বলে লক্ষ করে; সেসবের অস্তিত্ব সম্পর্কেও অনেকের স্পষ্ট ধারণা ছিল না। একদিকে ওয়ালীউল্লাহর বন্দনা সত্ত্বেও আরেক দল সমালোচক তাঁকে পাশ্চাত্য-প্রভাবের অধীন হিসেবে তকমা জুড়ে দেন, যা সে-সময় প্রায় অনপনেয় অবস্থায় পৌঁছে গেছে। একরকম মিথই তৈরি হয়েছিল; সেই মিথটি অবিনির্মাণ করতে ইংরেজি-ফরাসি রচনাসমূহের নিদর্শন প্রয়োজন ছিল। দীর্ঘকাল লেখকের ফরাসি দেশে অবস্থান, ফরাসিনী স্ত্রী, পোশাকপরিচ্ছদ মিলে এই কল্পিত ধারণা সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল বাংলা সমালোচনার ক্ষেত্রে; ইউরোপীয় সংস্কৃতি সম্পর্কে আমাদের ধারণায় ইউরোকেন্দ্রিকতার দরুন দেশীয় সংস্কৃতির লেখককে অধমর্ণ হিসেবে দেখানোর প্রবণতা সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল। অথচ বিশ্বনাগরিকতার বিচারে লেখকের ওপর প্রভাবের চেয়ে তার প্রতিগ্রহণ বা রিসেপশনই বেশি প্রাসঙ্গিক। তাঁর ওপর কী ছায়া পড়েছে তার চেয়ে কীভাবে তাঁর রচনায় আত্তীকৃত হয়েছে তা নির্ধারণ প্রয়োজন। লক্ষ করা গেছে, বাংলায় বা ইংরেজিতে হোক, ওয়ালীউল্লাহর রচনা বিপুল আদৃত হয়েছে, যা তাঁর মৌলিকতারই প্রমাণ। প্রথাগত ওয়ালীউল্লাহ চর্চায় এই গতানুগতিকতারই পুনরাবৃত্তি ঘটেছিল। বিদ্যায়তনিক সন্দর্ভেও তাই পুনরুচ্চারিত হয়েছে।

আপনার ২৬শে অক্টোবর তারিখের চিঠি যথাসময়ে পেয়েছি।

নানা কারণে আমার পারী যাওয়া হয়ে ওঠেনি। আমার বোন চিকিৎসার জন্য লন্ডন এসেছিল। প্রায় ৪ মাস কাটিয়ে গত মাসের শেষ দিকে সে ফিরে গিয়েছে।

আপনার চিঠি পাওয়ার পরে টেলিফোনে মিসেস ওয়ালীউল্লাহর সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করেছি। আপনার প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়ে প্রায় এক বছর আগে তিনি আপনার ঠিকানায় চিঠি পাঠিয়ে দিয়েছেন। এই চিঠি হয়ত আপনি পাননি। আমি এই চিঠির কপি সংগ্রহ করেছি।

L’arbre Sans Racine was published by Le Seuil in the fourth term of 1963. There was only one edition although the book met with lots of praise and had very good reviews.

I did the translation in French from a rough translation in English done by my husband and with his constant help. Maiden name is Anne Marie Thibaud. My Husband chose a different ending for the French version more dramatic and wrote it in English. He also decided to suppress the chapters on the Pir.

In 1967 Chatto & Windus published the English version which was translated from the French. Since then the book has been translated into German under the name ‘Baum ohne Wuhrzeln’ and published by Auflege Verlag, Berlin and Weimer in the German Democratic Republic.

– translated into Teheqo-Slovaquian under the name ‘Storm bez korenu’ Odeon.

– translated into Indonesian under the name ‘Pehon tampa Akar’, Djakarta, Yayasan Obor Indonesia 1990.

– translated into Japaneese and Malayam and appeared as a serial in both countries (as I was told.)

– translated in Urdu and several other languages.

His short story ‘Cargo’ was published in Spanish and Published in a Mexican magazine ‘El Cuento, Revisita de imaginacion’, n 55, under the name ‘Cargamento’ , in November.

The same was translted by me into French in Esprit, a well known French review, in June 1974.

‘Escape’ has been translated in French under the the name ‘la Fuite’ and published in Orient, n. 21, in 1962.

Syed Walliullah was an intellectual and he kept himself well-informed of all new literary as well as philosophical, art, scientific (new discoveries), historical and political publications and he went regularly to bookshops to buy new books on all these subjects. In that respect he was in no way different from his many Dhaka friends (writers and university professors). Among modern authors he had read Becket, Kafka, Woolf, Evelyn Waugh, Dylan Thomas, D H Lawrence. L Durell, Angus Wilson, Albee’s plays, Joyce’s Ulysses, Cesare Pavese, Moravia, Unamuno, Thomas Mann, Hesse, Gunter Grass, Sartre’s plays (I am not sure about ‘The Nausea’), Camu’s ‘Outsider’ and perhaps ‘the Plague’, Levi Straus’ ‘Sad tropics’, Cassier, Isaav Dentscher, most American novelists, Thomas Wolfe, Salinger, Henry Miller, Arthur Miller, Capote, Updike, Faulkner, Caldwell, Ezra Pound, T S Eliot, Styron (but not ‘Nat Turner’, nor Sophies Choice published after his death, nor ‘Twilight in Djakarta’ which you mentioned) and many others, novelists, playwrights, etc. He knew about French writers well before coming to France, He read newspapers, literary and scientific magazines.

He was very fond of Art and attendant
of all exhibitions. He was the first about to
write about Joynal Abedin and Sadequain. In
 Paris, he encountered Rashid Chowdhury
and Novera Ahmed. In London he knew
Shafiuddin Ahmed as well as others. He loved to listen to Indian and Western Classical music, Tagore’s song sung by Rajeswari Datta who was one of his friends.

I could not say whether he was influenced by the French Existentialists or not. He never mentioned it. I suppose all modern contemporary writers influenced each other in that respect. He loved his country. In my opinion he wanted to do his best for his country. He often said he wanted to write about a ‘clean man’.

I hope Mr. Qureshi gave you what you needed, that our discussions were helpful to clear certain matters that you are ready to present your thesis and I wish you all success.

I found the draft of a letter in which Waliullah  explains his Chander Amabashya and thought it might interest you. Here it is :

‘Quader is a crude, lustful and wholly unimaginative man who does not claim to be posses any spiritual qualities, not any noble sentiments; even the idea of love is unfamiliar to him. It is the loving elder brother who half imagines that Quader could be a saint because of the abnormal way of life of his younger brother. This is taken advantage of for a while by the teacher to suit his purpose. Quader is no more important than the dead woman : one is the perpetrator of a crime – the other the victim. The central theme is the knowledge of a crime – the evil act – of which the young teacher becomes possessor and which frightens him because of the responsibility attached with it : the evil act, as it were, posses on to the teacher as well. What I want to say is that the most important thing so much an evil act, nor is perpetrator but the attitude of the man outside such an act. This is one besetting problem which is now assuming a frightening dimension. The young man does not run away from the evil act but from the decision me must take and his responsibility attached with it. When the murderer fails to help him denying the evil act and allows the young teacher to live in his dream world where he needs not to do anything, he is obliged to face the reality and take a decision.

‘It is for man himself to decide in own his solitary world, though self-reckoning. You may probably see a similarity with it in Lal Shalu (French Version) when Majid returns alone to the nearly submerged mazar.

‘Regarding the young techers’s final decision I would like to add this: When he is literally pushed out in his own sphere he could no longer hide from the reality, as we must do, and avoid responsibility, still he could have kept quite. Why did he not? When he learnt that event the relatives of the murdered woman preferred to throw the blame on the ‘spirits’ rather than pursue the matter which might land them in trouble, re realizes the extent of his cowardice. He suddenly revolts. From coward the young teacher rises to a brave man and martyr as well. The book is not concerned with what happens after the teacher’s action. It is of no importance. Also for this reason, I have not tried to create suspense that might happenও যড়ঢ়ব ঃযব ংরঃঁধঃরড়হ রং হড়ি to him. The main thing is his decision.

I hope the situation is now better in Bangladesh.

I hope Mrs Zaman gave you some of Waliullah’s scripts and part of Ugly Asian – now I just found some photocopies namely p. 221 to p. 243. If these are missing in the batch I sent through Mrs Zaman, I will send them to you direct when you are through with the Ugly Asian. You could give back the whole book back to Mrs Zaman.

I also found Waliullah’s arcticle on Zainul Abedin’s Hilltracts paintings. He had written a first article praising his wonderful famine sketches. That one I never had. His second acrticle on Z. A. written in 1955, I have just sent to Mrs Zaman, together with an article by Amjad Ali in answer to my husband’s article (both of them published in Dawn) which promoted the article Mrs Zaman gave you and which is entitled, ‘Z. A. : A victim of Frank criticism’.

About the questions you asked about British Law I cannot answer. He certainly disliked the British and their Laws, but I believe there is more to it – I mean his purpose was to defend the downtrodden, As British did.

Dear Mr. Matin.

Thank you for your letter of July 26 which I found on my return from vacation on August 17.

In the meantime, Sultana Zaman came to visit me for a week, with several queries from Shamsuddin Chowdhury – I gave her ‘How to cook Beans’ and  ‘The Ugly Asian’ I have send the last two parts of this novel to Mr. Qureishi on my return from Bangladesh in March, but he never received it, probably due to the many hartals. I also gave Mrs. Zaman Waliullah’s ‘so called’ autobiographical sketch for to does not appear to be a description of his own life, but a beginning of a novel told in the first person.

Now I request you to forget about Waliullah’s case against Unesco, I discuss the matter with Mrs. Zaman: She also thinks that nothing of the kind should be published. Nothing can be gained The case has been judged. So I ask you not to publish it.

Now about Waliullah’s Unesco service: He was programme specialist (Grade P S) from 8.8. 1967 to 31, 12. 1970 and was in the mass communication department. In 1968 he accompanied the D G on a tour of Afghanistan (where he met the king) and Nepal. As far as I know, in 1968, he worked for the International Conference on Education and participated to an expert meeting on Cultural Rights as Human Rights. In 1969 he prepared a symposium on Mass Media and violence and he worked on International  assistance on training and Research in Mass Communication dealing with mass media and national development and the situation in developing countries.

Dear Sultana

I feel Bangladesh is so far. There are no news whatsever, not a word in the news papers, except on the cyclone one month ago, nothing on the elections. Somehow I heard Hasina had been elected and Matin just come and gave me more details. I wonder what you are thinking and what is your husband’s opinion.

I hope you received the power of Attorney signed by my children and that you are able to show it to the Bangla Academy. I wonder if they paid or found some other obstacles. I also wonder if Nawroje respected his engagement. I have no news from Kamal who only gave me exchanges for half of the 87000 takas I remitted him and was supposed to send them later. Perhaps he is in trouble.

When Matin came I showed him all of Wal’s scribbles in Bengali. There were a few pages on Habibullah which should interest Selina. Perhaps she had asked him, perhaps he sent him a clear
copy. Anyway I was posting it to Bulu to give it to her as she lives near close. I do not know her address.

 He also said there were another 20 Long pages on his own life story, his family. I really wish you were here and translate it to me with your own comments. There were other manuscripts in Bengali, one act play entitled The Tunnel and others which may have been published. I could make copies and gave them to the Bangla Academy, or to the other publisher. Please advise me if you have an idea.

 I also went through his English scribbles. There is 27 typed pages on ‘How to cook beans, An Asian adventure in France’, another many typed pages on something that could be part of his adventures in France; 16 typed long pages which could be the beginning of one of his novels, starting : ‘ By the side of the civil court and facing the river Dhanumati…’. Perhaps his first attempt to translate Lal Shalu. But the English and French version start differently with a description of the country.(By the way did you receive the English version I sent you months ago). Then 28 typed pages of what seems to me to be again an other attempt to translate one of his novels, starting : ‘Someone is screaming in a piercing manner’. Characters are Raisuddin, Ambia Khatun. Then another long 15 typed pages about a Dada sahib which resembles Chander Amabashya. And there is very sensitive young girl, Saleema, which as far I know does not belong to this novel. Do you think the whole lot could be published by Bangla Academy
to gather with a short introduction by me as Mr Musa had said? I did not find my letters and I think his interesting letters are too few, but still I could include 5 or 6 of them.

Were you able to go to Calcutta? Are you on a holiday? Are you planning a trip abroad? Make sure you stop in Paris. I miss our chatting.

লেখকরা প্রবাসী হয়ে পড়লে সচরাচর তাঁদের রচনাধারা মূল ভূখণ্ড থেকে দূরত্বের কারণে ক্ষীণস্রোত হয়ে পড়ে বা রচনার ধারা পাল্টায়। সৈয়দ ওয়ালীউল্লাহ প্রবাসে দৈবের বশে অবস্থান করেও আমৃত্যু নিজ ভাষা, নিজ ভূমির প্রতি অনুগত ছিলেন। পাশ্চাত্য সভ্যতার অনুগ্রহপুষ্ট দেশান্তরী অনুকারকে পরিণত হননি। সেই স্বভাষা, সংস্কৃতির প্রতি অনুরাগ চারিয়ে গেছে অ্যান মারি ওয়ালীউল্লাহর মধ্যেও। তিনিও আমৃত্যু একজন নিষ্ঠাবান ভারতবিদের ভূমিকাই পালন করে গেছেন। এই চর্চার ক্ষেত্রে তিনি যত না দিয়েছেন তার তুলনায় পেয়েছেন সামান্যই। তাঁর নিবেদনে বাংলা সংস্কৃতি উত্তরোত্তর ঋদ্ধ হয়েছে। এই উপলক্ষে আধা আত্মজৈবনিক 888sport sign up bonusচারণ এটি।
